There was an interesting disucssion on the old Alamo-Film Forum site referencing the explosion of the powder magazine. If you view that particular scene on a frame by frame basis, you will see that it is not a continuous shot; that is, the explosion outside the wall was spliced into the scene. You first see the explosion of the magazine and the appearance of two holes in the outside wall. Then there is a massive explosion OUTSIDE the church which is supposed to knock down the southern apse wall. However, in viewing stills taken of the scene, it's obvious that the wall was knocked down prior to the explosion. Take a look and see if you can spot the splice.

Interesting, John. I will have to go back and check out the explosion scene once more.

Wasn't it also you who'd mentioned on the old forum how the chapel walls had been pre-designed for destruction and that the south wall of the transept was built by Ybarra so thin that it could've practically been kicked down? A solid adobe wall cannot be relied upon to separate at a certain point no matter how good a pyrotechnic team you have. When the explosion went off, it was probably like removing a piece from a puzzle, or opening a door, but with lots of smoke, so as to maintain the illusion. (I think Mo has a great still of the transept being blown up. Hey Mo?)

All this brings up a sore point for those of us Waynamo buffs who yet wish that the chapel had survived the battle. Had Wayne decided at the last moment to not blow the powder magazine, the walls in question would've eventually come down of their own accord---with the help of the elements---soon enough.

Have I mis-spoken about any of this, John?

John your right on your point about the splice I had a close

you go through it frame by frame yep you can see it

Ned I will try and find the photo you are on about shortly

Didn't I send you a copy though ??

All those "Behind The Scenes Photographs" are extremely interesting, I think. It´s great that so many photo´s were shot back then and that you guys have them.

As for Ken Curtis´death scene, it seems strange that a dead body can hang over the wall like that. I guess it´s on account of the spurs being stuck, but still... - It´s also a bit odd that he would wear spurs during the siege. I mean, you don´t have much use for spurs in that situation. It´s just a small detail, of course...

As for Rudy's death scene, it was necessary to go over hundreds of photos taken of the interior of the church before I was able to confirm exactly where the scene was filmed. Fortunately, I had a much larger print of the scene than the one that appears in the movie. It had a very distinctive patterned of broken stucco on the wall above Rudy's head. Using that as a reference, I was able to match the pattern to other photos that I had in my collection. The scene was filmed along the back inside wall of the church immediately to the right of the location of the scene where Joan O'Brien and the children are uncovered under a tarp by Mexican soldiers . That is, if you are standing in the open doorway of the church and looking directly at the back wall, Joan, etc are in the far left corner of the back wall and Rudy is to the right of that. Initially Rudy always stated that his death scene was filmed outside of the church, but after showing him the evidence, and gently refreshing his memory, he agreed as to the location. Hope this helps.

Thanks John

" It Do " really shed a lot of light on the question about where
it was filmed.

Is this going to appear in Volume 2 ????

Take care

These were *cowboy movies* in 1959. All cowboys wore spurs all the time in cowboy movies. Thank goodness for The Alamo (2004) -- and thank Ron Howard and John Lee Hancock. John Wayne's The Alamo is, however, my favorite movie of all time.

You´re right, of course, Rich! We have to see the Waynamo in a film-historic light. As you say, back then all cowboys wore spurs in the cowboy movies, and the heroes often wore a white hat and the crook a black hat, and so on...
