Possibly. In any event, the decision was probably made months later when Duke was in Africa filming "Hatari!" John might know. On the other hand, it could just have been chosen as an expendable scene when push came to shove regarding reducing the length of the film. I have changed my thoughts about this cut since several years ago. I had originally figured that Duke had the scene written in just to "give the kid a break," and, once that need was no longer there, he cut it. However, it was clearly the set-up for the later scene with Blind Nell and Jocko, so it should have been kept in for that reason.
