Now then can some one explain the reasons behind the making of the documentary
or was it just done to tie in with the release of the the full length version on video ??

I would be grateful for any input on my question

Many thanks

I think in my humble opinion it was simply a tie in with the video release.

Huberman has done a fair bit of work related to The Alamo over the years inc' "The De La Pena Diary" in 2000 on which he was producer & Director. Also he has worked on "John Wayne American Legend" and given a lot of talks on the subject at various universities over the years.
It's my guess that MGM were looking to push the video with the documentary fronted by someone who knew their onions and Huberman fitted the bill.
The strange thing is that my full length VHS version has all the missing footage but no documentary, but later versions are minus the extra footage but contain the documentary (albeit cut to 40 minutes) so the logic behind all that completely defeats the object in my opinion ??

Was it later VHS versions who was minus the extra footage, and with the documentary cut to 40 min.?
(I know it´s the case with the DVD version, because I have a copy myself)

Could it have something to do with available space? Maybe there was´nt enough space on the VHS tape to have both the full movie and the full documentary. Because the full movie is 3 hours and 6 min. (or is it 12 min.?) long, and the full documentary is 1 hour long. Maybe that´s too much material to squeeze into one VHS tape? But there should be enough room for a cut version of the documentary, or they could have cut the extra footage from the movie to make room for the full documentary.
Whatever the case may be, it´s very annoying that they chose to cut both the movie and the documentary!

Sorry Hans, I didn't clarify that point. I was referring to later DVD'S not having both.

The point you made about VHS tapes is correct, of course there would not have been sufficient space on a standard tape to include all that I mentioned unless they produced a twin cassette version but that would probably have been cost prohibitive not to mention extremely bulky .

In 1988, a two laser disc gatefold letterbox edition of THE ALAMO was released by MGM/UA It contained the Overture, Enrt' Acte and Exit music and the film itself ran 2 hours and 52 minutes, with a 60 minute version of the Brian Huberman documentary.

In 1992, a three laser disc box set letterbox Director's Cut edition was released, with a running time of 3 hours and 22 minutes, with the same 60 minute version of the Huberman Documentary.

The shorter VHS 2 tape box set version came out in 1990, I believe. While it did have the Overture, Enrt' Acte and Exit music the film remained the 2 hour and 52 minute version, with a 40 minute version of the Brian Huberman documentary.

In 1992, the 2 tape box set version of the Director's Cut was released with all of the above extras and a 3 hour, 22 minute run time. Again, only the 40 minute version of the Huberman documentary appeared here.

In 2000, a one disc DVD version of THE ALAMO was released. It contains the 2 hour and 42 minute version of the film with the 40 minute Brian Huberman documentary. While it has been repackaged at least four times, the content remains the same.

Professor Brian Huberman's documentary for THE ALAMO was neither the first one he ever did on the subject, nor probably the last. It is my belief that Huberman already had the documentary prepared and then offered it to MGM/UA when he discovered that they were coming out with a new edition of THE ALAMO. Do you honestly think MGM/UA would've gone out of their collective way to add bonus materials? We're lucky they even decided to release THE ALAMO in the first place. Huberman probably offered the documentary to them and, not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, they gladly accepted. What about it, Mustang?

Sorry for the late reply, Ned. I've been on the road with my farewell tour for awhile. You make a good point. Maybe he just happened to be at the right place at the right time. I've got to believe that there is more to that documentary than meets the eye. I've tried to conact Brian numerous times to see if he would be willing to release the "unseen" portion of the interviews, to no avail. Who knows, maybe something is in he works for the 50th anniversary.

Thanks a lot for the replies!

One last question: When was the documentary produced? - And when was it issued for the first time?

Again, the first time I became aware of it was on the 1988 laser disc of THE ALAMO. Some of the footage,
partiucularly that of the ruined Waynamo set indicates that it would've had to have been made prior to mid-
1987 when the set was revamped for ALAMO: The Price Of Freedom. As you can see from Alamo John's
above screen-capture, before POF there was no exterior to the west wall, as it yet retained it's false front
from the 1982 film BARBAROSA. POF also later filled in the anachronistic upper windows of the chapel and
modified the statue niches to accomodate statues. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Nef! It helps a lot! So it was made in 1987, from the look of the church, and realeased in 1988. Good!

While I can't add anything to this discussion, although I have seen much of Brian's work, I can add some things about Brian. Yet another charter member of Alamo International, I met Brian at the re-enactment in 1980 - I was Travis at the Alamo and at B-ville in front of Happy Shahan - when I also met the Nefarious One, Craig Covner, Nina and a whole slew of great people. The guy was a funny dude! He, Don Clarke and I had a ball both at the Alamo and at Brackettville and we three kind of hung out together during the whole time, not taking ourselves too seriously, but respecting what we were doing because of our mutual high regard for the saga of the Alamo. Because of his long, black mustache, he favored a Mexican rather than a Texican and he called himself "Frito Bandido" and if truth be told, we had a good laugh at some of the goings-ons of some of the other re-enactors, who took the whole thing much, much too seriously, to the point that someone almost got hurt. If memory serves me well, Brian put a bayonet through Mike Waters'-Jim Bowie's sleeve and although it was serious at the time, we turned the corner and almost busted a gut - sorry Mike! I'm sorry I fell out of touch with him, as I did the others, when I went on to other challenges, but he was a fun, fun guy along with being incredibly intelligent. We had many serious, in-depth discussions on the Alamo, and my having been a combat vet, he asked me many insightful questions while sitting around Alamo Village, watching the day roll away under that Big Sky, as to how things might've really gone down in the fight, throwing the mythical elements aside. A fine, fine, very introspective dude. I miss him...

Brian was making his documentary for years before any MGM/UA deal and had his heart as into it as John Wayne did in The Alamo. Happy provided him with umpteen photos and much support for many moons. Bill Moody made his personal 16mm. color "home movies" shot during production totally available to him. Understandably, both were miffed when Brian made a deal with MGM/UA, apparently without their knowledge. Personally, I would imagine there is another side to this story. All said, Brian captured wonderful moments in his doc. that have become part of the legacy of the movie.

If I remember correctly, Bill Moody said in an interview I had with him that he loaned the home movies to Brian as they were supposed to be used in a class Brian was involved with. Or so Bill said. He was completely suprised to find them included in the documentary and very upset. Or so I recall.
