Seeing this picture from the Japan premier....what happens to the cardboard images used over the marquee? Did Batjac get them back or are they in movie collector limbo somewhere?

I have no idea about what they did with those type of things back in the 1960s, but, when The Alamo 2004 was playing locally, the theatre had a large (maybe 5' x 4') cardboard standee in the auditorium. I had asked if I could photograph it and was allowed and when they finished the movie's run they asked me if I wanted it and gave it to me. It's still up in the attic because I have no room to display it. So, probably, some collector or collectors have a large number of these things somewhere.

For those who remember, I mentioned in my book that Wayne gave out custom replica Bowie knives to 75 news reporters and various dignitaries during premiere week in San Antonio. If you go to the Conway Vintage Treasures website, they are selling the one that Wayne presented to the owner of the Handy Andy store where one of the celebration activities took place. There is also a photo of Duke making the presentation. Only $9,500. Sorry I can't post the photo.

Even that cost $8,250.

I remember when I first saw John Wayne's The Alamo there was a card board standee of a stockade that was maybe about four feet high by ten feet long in the lobby.

Ha! I have one of these that I got for $5.00 in the Alamo Gift Shop in 1965, and it didn't have that dumb stick-on plate on the top either.

I have had 10 or 12 of these over the years. It is nothing more than a Carvel-Hall made replica of the William Sweet Knife. $5 to $50 everyday on Ebay.
(of course the brass plate at the top is extra! ).

I got my Carvel Hall knife back in 1969 in the Old Knife Shop in Knott's Berry for $19.95. That was two days wages for me back then,
but I just had to have it. Shortly after, a friend of mine decided to throw it at a tree and bent the tip. So I had to take it to a grinder
to repoint the blade. It was sort of a surreal experience. The grinder's shop was in a seedy section of downtown Los Angeles and looked
like it had been there a hundred years. Grinder himself was this old black guy who took the job seriously. Only lost about a quarter of an
inch off the tip and his buffing the blade sort of toned down the mirror sheen, making my knife that much more uniquie, now.

Actually, that was probably what mine cost. I don't really remember. But I damaged the tip myself by trying to throw it into a tree. Damn that TV series opening! Fortunately, mine just bent a bit -- and is still obvious when you look closely. The name plate keeps falling off one side and hanging by one tack.

Seems we might have all tried the knife throwing bit too. I got my Bowie Knife when I was 14 at a Gibsons Discount store in Hereford Texas. :)
