My first post on the board! I see the last post on this thread was a year ago but here goes:

Crockett: Still John Wayne
Bowie: Robert Mitchum
Travis: Charlton Heston
Seguin: Ricardo Montalban (make the role bigger)
Smitty: Ricky Nelson

Heston had just played Andrew Jackson in 1958's "The Buccaneer". You have to admit the man had commanding presence(We are talking about the man who played Moses and Ben Hur). Nelson would be a follow up on "Rio Bravo". I would make Smitty's character older and make him a version of Will Patton, Crockett's nephew. For Ricardo Montalban you could have his Seguin make his nighttime breakout from the Alamo and survive the battle as in real life.

I just thought of a casting change no one mentioned:

James Bonham: Jeffrey Hunter or Robert Wagner (Sorry Patrick Wayne).

Not a bad choice for Travis, but I still feel Harvey did a good job.

Viperjock did a good job...if you are re-casting in the same time period.
Gets a little tougher when you try to fill the roles in modern times.
Chris...
Crockett - Christian Bale
Bowie - Ryan Goslin or Bradly Cooper
Travis - Mark Wahlberg
Bonham - James Franco
Segin - Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Dickinson - Jeremy Renner
(not alot to choose from these days)

How about this guy for a modern day Movie Crockett? Daniel Day Lewis really gets into playing his characters. He probably would have went bear hunting for real to prepare for his role! In 2004 he was in his late forties so he would have matched the real Crockett in age.

Too bad he didn't play Crockett in THE ALAMO ('04). With him and Jason in leads, you would have had to quit your job to stay in front of the screen.

I like him -- and a lot in LAST OF THE MOHICANS. I also thought a lot about him as Crockett when I first saw the movie, but finally decided he might not be able to take on the humor of the role. I could be wrong.

Imagine if Michael Mann made a remake of the Alamo. Dale Dye could have been the military advisor like he did for "Last of the Mohicans".

Now, now, Chris. I didn't want to get a political fight started. I wasn't insulting any of our politicians. Maybe it wasn't kind of me to cast Putin as Santa Anna, but he's tough enough to take it. Or he can Crimea river. ;)

For what it's worth:

Gregory Peck played Lt. Joe Clemons in the 1959 movie Pork Chop Hill. Ten years earlier he played Brigadier General Frank Savage in Twelve O'clock High. The point is he was a little over aged to be playing someone who graduated West Point in 1951 fighting a battle in 1953. I think that America could have bought him playing Travis. Peck would have nailed it playing Travis.

I agree, GT. And he looks pretty bad-ass in this image, too. Wouldn't want to mess with this guy.

For Rich: If you had to choose between Mitchum here, or "laughing boy" Widmark, who would you go with?

Not half-bad, Ned. I'd have cast Mitchum.

whiterabbitt83, in my line of work, I have had conversation with Loretta Switt. She had her dog answer the phone. I don't think that Jim Bowie would
have his dog answer the phone.

Just out of curiosity, why is Russell Crowe so idealized for the role of Houston? I mean, he did a great job in Gladiator and such, but Houston? Crowe's too short for him, and he's a Brit. But, then again, maybe he would have done a great job if given the chance. Off note, Russell Crowe was also considered for the role of Stonewall Jackson in "Gods and Generals", but the role went to Stephen Lang. Probably for the better.

Height and nationality are unimportant for casting leads. As I've mentioned before, height is created by the camera angle and apple boxes. As for the correct accent, a major part of an actor's job is accents. Crowe would have nailed it (as he did in "3:10 to Yuma"). Even Laurence Harvey could have handled Travis' accent -- as he did perfectly in "Summer and Smoke" -- if John Wayne had directed him to do so.

When I saw Crowe in "Gladiator," my immediate thought was that he would be a perfect Sam Houston (possibly even Bowie). There is a painting from life of Houston done in the early 1830's said to have possibly been done by George Catlin. It strongly suggests Russell Crowe to me. Crowe would have been perfect for the part at the time the movie was made, and was "in talks" earlier, but pulled out when Ron Howard did.

well once he joined the nottingham cast
his ego took over and nottingham became robin hood
and the film sucked, star ego trip, the odds are good
that had he got the role of Houston, his ego would have struck again
even though the the Alamo was made years before robin hood
i think he would have wanted the script changed
so houston was the star like in robin hood
